“Monkey Majik and Yoshida Brothers pack Toronto’s Mob Club”
Two of Japan’s hottest music groups were in Toronto Sunday night at the Mod Club. Monkey Majik and Yoshida Brothers are in North America touring as part of Send愛 concerts, benefiting Tōhoku charity organizations.
Monkey Majik is a popular band in Japan consisting of Maynard Plant and Blaise Plant, each acting as lead vocalists and guitarists, as well as two Japanese members: tax on drums, and DICK on bass. Many of the concert goers that waited over an hour for the doors to open last time said that the members of the band at heroes in Tōhoku and their home Sendai.
The Yoshida Brothers, Ryoichiro and Kenichi, perform traditional Japanese music on the shamisen. They began playing the Japanese instrument at the age of five. The mostly Japanese-Canadian crowd raked along College Street waiting for over an hour past the time doors were scheduled to open to watch one of Japan’s most popular soft rock bands play the popular Toronto Mod Club. Inside the venue over 600 people filled the floor standing over two hours to be bewitched by the music coming from the stage.
“Yoshida Brothers Meet Monkey Majik”
They performed their first gig together to a sold out crowd at Webster Hall in New York City on November 14th. The Yoshida Brothers took the stage for the first half of the show performing their traditional Tsugaru-jamisen style music, along with prog-rock improvisations. Monkey Majik took the stage for the second half. It was the first time Monkey Majik performing on the American soil. The band need not be nervous, since the majority of the audience knew their songs already. The band’s songs were song in a mixture of English and Japanese. The melodic vocals of the Plant brothers fit perfectly with their upbeat rock riffs. The concert had an unexpected accompaniment from the main concert stage upstairs at Webster Hall. Death metal band, The Sword, were also performing that night.
