4.A Good Day To Die

“On February 6, 1973, we went to the American Indian Movement at, Custer, South Dakota, to protest the judicial handling of Wesley Bad Heart Bull’s murder. We went there to bring attention to the fact that he was murdered by a white man and say this kind of treatment had to stop. And I made the statement that, “Today was a good day to die.” And I meant that in reference to the killings of Native People. The discrimination, bigotry and racism had to stop. That day was a good day to die for racism, a good day to die for discrimination, a good day to die for bigotry and all the discriminatory policies toward Native People.”
- Dennis Banks

Today was a good day to die. The term “a good day to die” was first spoke by Crazy Horse, the great Oglala warrior. We made a documentary about my life story and the rise of the American Indian Movement and then from that clip of my speech, before we went to Custer, was me talking about, it was a good day to die.
